Further to my previous post, there is a cheaper and worth a try alternative as suggested by my eldest son.

Go the Raspberry way

 

Basically use a Raspberry PI 3 as a VPN server

All this for under €80. Worth a try I think. Anyway, equipment has now been ordered for delivery to my son who will do his best to set it up in time for me to pick it up when I am next in Germany which will be very soon.
