⚜️ Day 34 ⚜️
Somehow, reading or watching the news, I detect a minimum amount of sprouting optimism although the data and statistics do not necessarily confirm this.
In the UK for instance, the situation appears to be deteriorating. It is very difficult to know the actual status since only hospital cases and deaths are reported. Fact is that for the third consecutive day, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in one day in British hospitals is on the rise. On Saturday, the UK announced the deaths of 888 patients infected with the virus. The day before, the Department of Health had reported 847 deaths. In total, at least 15,464 people have died across the Channel from Covid-19. The number of people testing positive for the coronavirus has risen to a total of 114,217, an increase of 5,526 from the day before. Care England, which represents independent retirement homes, estimates that the actual number of deaths there could be as high as 7,500. A figure which is not reported in the official UK statistics. This would bring the number of Corona virus related deaths in the UK at 23,000 compared to 19,300 in France.
The French Prime Minister and the French Health Minister will give another joint press conference this afternoon. It should be available on TV at 17:30. The objective is toshow the options for success on May 11. With three weeks to go before the planned deconfinement, Edouard Philippe is to explain the government’s first avenues for a way out of the crisis which promises to be extraordinarily complex. Schools, masks, transport, screening… he should address the options considered, but not all of them have been decided yet at this time. Even if the number of hospitalizations and intensive care admissions has been falling for several days, the death toll remains very heavy, with 19,323 deaths according to the latest report on Saturday evening, including 642 more deaths in 24 hours.

▶︎ Contactless payment
The maximum amount will rise from 30€ to 50€ as of May 11th. This was announced by the French Banking Federation (FBF).
▶︎ Bag in a box
The sales of wine in “BIB” explode during the confinement in the Aude region. This is the new trend in consumption: the flexible wine pouch, the Bag in Box is considered preferable. In this particular period, virtual aperitifs have become very popular. We meet at a given hour, a glass in hand in front of our screen divided into a mosaic of friends. Cheers.
▶︎ One world together at home
More than 70 artists and personalities responded to Lady Gaga’s and WHO’s call for a concert in support of healthcare workers fighting coronavirus. For more than eight hours, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, they took turns singing and playing music for a free event broadcast worldwide. 35 million dollars were raised. The full concert of 8 hours is available on YouTube.
Most likely, more news to come but for now it is apéritif time

A classic Manhattan cocktail. One of my favorites.

🇬🇧 Hartmut Fey from Lauterbach in Saarland had a creative idea to get his French baguette despite a contact ban. With the help of his fishing rod, the handover takes place at the German-French border to prevent direct contact. Otherwise, a fine of at least 250 euros would be imposed.
