Day 48 of the second confinement & 8 days left till 🌲Christmas 🌲

🔷🔷🔷

▫️ Over 17.000 new cases in France during the past 24 hours is certainly not good news. That bring the daily average based on the rolling week to over 14.000. A far cry from the maximum 5.000 new daily cases targeted for December 15th which was a couple of days ago.

▫️ The numbers in neighbouring countries are even higher. I think the 3rd wave is well under way (see chart below).

▫️Vaccines: The 27 states of the EU will be able to “start on the same day” their vaccination campaigns against Covid-19, after the notification of the green light from the European regulator to the vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech, announced Wednesday December 16 the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

The vaccination strategy was presented yesterday by Jean Castex and Olivier Véran to the National Assembly.

The release of the 1st vaccine is expected on December 23rd

The first phase of vaccination will begin “from the last week of December”, “if the conditions are met”, announced the Prime Minister. It will concern “about a million elderly people” living in institutions such as Ehpad. “This first phase will be spread over a period of six to eight weeks, to take into account the 21-day delay between the first vaccination and the recall”.

The circle of vaccinated populations will be enlarged as supplies become available. The second stage will concern “about 14 million people” particularly at risk because of their age or chronic pathology, as well as certain health professionals. A vaccination program for people living at home will be set up.

It will be staggered “according to the pace of delivery of the different vaccines” but also according to age categories, said Olivier Véran. Will therefore be invited to be vaccinated “the over 75 years, then the over 65 years and finally the over 50 years with health and medico-social sector staff when they are 50 years old and older,” said the Minister of Health.

Finally, “it is only in a third phase, at the end of spring, that we will open vaccination to the entire population,” stressed Jean Castex. These 50 million or so people will once again be classified as priority categories. Firstly, “people aged between 50 and 64 years, a significant part of the population,” said Olivier Véran.

Then, “there will be professionals in sectors essential to the functioning of the country in times of epidemic,” he added, citing the sectors “security, education, food”, “vulnerable and precarious, as well as professionals who care for them, people living in confined accommodation or enclosed spaces. And then will come “the rest of the adult population,” he concluded.

Last minute decision. We went up and around the Cité where we have not been for quite while. With the exception of 2 or 3, all shops are closed. There is no one around as we say in French “Il n’y a pas un chat” (there is not a single cat”).

Somewhat depressing
