Following an early health council, the Prime Minister spoke yesterday evening from the Elysée Palace.

Confinement: “We can still give ourselves a chance to avoid it”. Jean Castex immediately dismissed the idea of a new confinement. “The question of a confinement is a legitimate one, but we know the very heavy impact it will have on the French people at all levels. We can still give ourselves a chance to avoid it”.

He nevertheless announced new restrictive measures to counter the circulation of the virus and its variants in France.

▸ For the time being, schools remain open and school holidays remain on their original dates.

Large non-food supermarkets closed. “As of this Sunday, non-food shopping centres with a surface area of more than 20,000 square meters, that is, those that encourage the most mixing of populations, will be closed,” he first announced.

Closing of borders The Prime Minister announced that the borders with countries outside the European Union will be closed from 0:00 hours on Sunday, “unless there are compelling reasons”. The term “European area” refers to the European Union and eight other countries on the continent: Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, the Vatican and Switzerland.

Daily snapshot

It has been getting a bit more difficult to get reliable and trustworthy data regarind the number of vaccinations. Below the data has been double checked and will in future reflect the information of J-1. I have also added the 2nd vaccination data and the vaccins stock which is a real issue.

🔹 The prefecture of Aude underlines a new “deterioration of the sanitary situation” in the department.

The course was, if not expected, at least predictable. On Friday 29 January, the Aude prefecture announced an incidence rate (number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over one week, editor’s note) of 203.6. A figure which, in not so distant times, would have been worth the county to see the curfew brought forward to 6 pm, a measure extended to the whole territory, since January 16th, 2021. This updated rate reflects the inexorable advance of the epidemic in the département, since it was put at 193.7 on 22 January and 163 on 15 January. The “deterioration in the health situation” referred to by the prefecture was also reflected in a positive rate of 5.9%. Xavier Crisnaire, departmental delegate of the regional health agency (ARS), gave another translation of these data: “This means 759 positive cases out of the 12,829 tests carried out in the last seven days.

🔹 Vaccination targets

Although , despite the missing vaccine supplies, the vaccination targets are being met at the moment but the announced major increase from March onwards to reach 47 Million by the summer appears insurmontable to me.

🔹 Vaccinations report

The governement is keeping to the target of 1 Million by the end of January and added a target of 2,5 Million by the end of Feb

Let us hope that the announced vaccin short deliveries will not affect the level of vaccinations too much. Many appointments have already been postponned.

To get rid of the “Week-End” effect it is worth looking the daily rolling 7 day average which clearly still shows a slow but steady increase in the data.

🔹 Histovec: check the details of a second-hand vehicle before buying it

Are you planning to buy a used car or two-wheeler and would like to know more about the vehicle you want to acquire? Before you decide to buy, you can consult the Histovec website, offered by the Ministry of the Interior. It gives you access to reliable information on the history of the used vehicle you are interested in. Since 12 January 2021, it has been enriched with data from technical inspections.

To do this, you must ask the seller to send you a link to the report on the history of his vehicle that he has generated via the HistoVec site.

This free and official service allows sellers and future buyers to share a certain amount of information about the vehicle:

● date of first registration
● successive changes of ownership
● possible claims
● administrative situation of the vehicle (pledge, opposition, theft)
● dates and results of technical inspections as well as mileage history
● technical characteristics of the vehicle (make, colour, cylinder capacity, CV, noise level, pollution criteria, etc.)

🔹 Meteo

Planning to go on a long walk on the coast Tuesday or Wednesday to make the most of the expected good weather.

🔹 Vendée Globe

Not previously mentioned, but there are still 5 women out of the original 7 who are still on the way to Les Sables d’Olonne. The 1st one is Clarisse Crémer on the boat Banque Populaire X.

Winner of the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe, double title holder of the Route du Rhum (2014 and 2018), the IMOCA Banque Populaire X has proven itself in its previous lives. Well-born, reliable and still performing despite the absence of foils, this boat is an ideal platform for Clarisse Crémer’s participation in the 2020 Vendée Globe.

🔹 Superbowl LV

Talking about women, the Superbowl 55 will take place next weekend, Sunday February 7th to be precise (in fact it will early hours of Monday for us in Europe).

It will be the 1st time a female, namely Sarah Thomas, will be officiating at the Superbowl.

The two teams competing are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers v the Kansas City Chiefs. The Buccaneers, who will be the first team to ever play a Super Bowl in their home stadium, will don their white jerseys and pewter pants, while the Chiefs will sport their red jerseys.

I guess I’ll be up most of the night watching it live on TV
