Living through a pandemic

in the south of France

337 days in Carcassonne since

1st lockdown in March 2020

▫️ DAILY AND WEEKLY STATISTICS HERE .

▫️ France has no plans to increase health measures. The Defence Council held on Wednesday 17 February considered that the figures for the epidemic were not serious enough to justify a new turn of the screw.

▫️ PREFECTURE DE L’AUDE

The Prefect of the Aude, Sophie Elizéon, who arrived in our department in October 2019, was appointed yesterday morning in the Council of Ministers, Inter-ministerial Delegate for the Fight against racism, antisemitism and anti-LGBT hatred. Prefect of the Indre since 11 November 2018, Thierry Bonnier will therefore be the new Prefect of the Aude from March 8th.

▫️ USA v EUROPE

Once again I have selected the top 5 european countries which more or less match the US population for a comparison of the number of cases and Covid-19 related deaths. Unlike a few months ago, the situation is clearly worse in percentage terms in the USA.

▫️ ZOE

Spotted in Carcassonne a few days ago. The new Renault ZOE of the Gemdarmerie. In a way, I am quite pleased to see the governement agencies being equipped with electrical cars but I immediately thought that in case of a high speed pursuit, it would certainly run out of power long before the bandits…

▫️ THE WINTER SALES are extended by two weeks until 2 March, the Governement announced. They were to end Tuesday, February 16. The government has agreed to the request of trade professionals who wanted them extended because of the remaining stocks.

▫️ WEC NEWS (World Endurance Champioship)

Even if you are not a World Endurance Racing fan the way I am, you cannot refute the fact that the latest design from Peugeot for the new Hypercar category is simply something else. I am looking forward to the Le Mans 24H in June 2022.

▫️ NASA

Do not forget a Mars Landing is planned for 3:55 p.m. EST. The entry, descent, and landing phase begins at approximately 3:47 p.m. EST. Watch it all here: nasa.gov/live

▫️ ANCILLARY NOTES FROM A SMALL ISLAND from our correspondent in Britain

✒️ DUBIOUS ADVICE?

Wetherspoon boss urges Britain to drink its way out of Covid debt.

Wetherspoon boss Tim Martin has called on Britain to drink its way out of fiscal deficit as he urged the government to reopen pubs and restaurants.

“Many people have correctly pointed out that the three lockdowns of the last year have been a disaster for the hospitality, retail, arts and entertainment industries, but our calculations show that they have been an even bigger disaster for public finances”.

Next Prime Minister perhaps!

▫️ MUSIC

ANOTHER ONE IN MY TOP 100

This one brings back multiple memories but the most vivid one was an electricity blackout in the basket ball / concert hall at University in Pennsylvania, just after the concert started. And guess who was one of the organisers in his capacity of President of the Foreign Student Club.

▫️ PIC OF THE DAY

Gehrden in Lower Saxony – Germany

I cannot remember how I got the original picture or when or by whom it was taken. It remonds me however of the time my friend A. and I were flying around the area in a small private plane. We went down quite low to wave the wings at the our firends and family below. The control tower at the Hannover Airport (HAJ) spotted immediately we had gone under the normally agreed 2.000 feet ceiling and told us off. I had the controls at the time and immediately pulled on the stick to get back up. It was not on this occasion the photo was taken because we were flying on a beautiful summer day and many were in their gardens.

▫️ NEWS FROM ACROSS THE POND

▫️ FACT

▫️ FUN

The latest Ladybird books

▫️ WEATHER

Not as good as I was expecting.

▫️ VENDEE GLOBE

I watched last evening live at 10:30pm the arrival of “Campagne de France” with skipper Miranda Merron.

▫️ WALKS

Did not make it out as planned. The 1st expected delivery arrived late morning, the second one middle of the afternoon and the handyman did not appear. So instead I could enjoy a seriously pleasant time outside (with 20ºC in the shade) for the first time this year, reading some of my new comic books, feet up, cup of tea and the occasional nap.
