Hey kids—yes, I mean you, the ones who taught us how to mute ourselves on Zoom and introduced us to oat milk. Before you roll your eyes and mutter “Okay, Boomer,” give us five minutes. No ranting, no lectures—just a reminder of what your parents’ generation actually brought to the table.

Because truth be told, we’re not as out of touch or stuck in the past as the memes suggest. We’ve seen a lot, changed a lot, and yes—learned a lot from your generation, too.

But first, a few receipts.

💡 We Helped Build the Digital World You Live In

Remember that iPhone you can’t live without? The laptop you work on? The internet itself? Baby Boomers didn’t invent all of it, but we sure helped make it possible. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates? Boomers. The early coders and engineers who laid the foundation for the tech revolution? Also Boomers.

So yes, we may text with one finger, but we helped make the world where texting is a thing at all.

✊ We Protested Before It Was a Hashtag

Long before “woke” was a word, we were in the streets fighting for civil rights, women’s rights, and an end to unjust wars. We didn’t have social media—but we had shoe leather, typewriters, and bullhorns.

That passion for justice you feel? We felt it, too. And we didn’t wait for permission to act on it.

🌎 We Launched the Environmental Movement

The first Earth Day in 1970? That was our doing. We helped start the push for clean air, clean water, and protected lands. The EPA, endangered species protections, and environmental laws? Boomers got those rolling.

Sure, we didn’t fix everything. But we were the first generation to say, “Wait—maybe we shouldn’t dump chemicals in the river.”

🎸 We Gave You the Soundtrack of Your Childhood (and Ours)

From The Beatles to Prince to Springsteen, our generation’s music shaped decades. And let’s be honest: some of those tunes still live on your playlists. We didn’t just consume pop culture—we created it. Films, music, TV, literature—we left a deep, global imprint.

🚀 We Dreamt Big—and Sometimes Got There

We watched humans walk on the moon before we even had color TV. And then we turned space exploration, medical breakthroughs, and computing power into lifelong missions. Boomers helped sequence the human genome, build the tech you use every day, and yes—launch the Mars rovers.

🧓 We’re Still Learning—and Still Listening

Boomers get a bad rap for being stuck in their ways. But you know what? Many of us have adapted, evolved, and opened our minds. We’ve changed our views, learned from our kids, and are still asking big questions about how to make the world better.

You showed us how to recycle properly, embrace therapy, and rethink what success looks like. That’s the beauty of having generations learn from each other.

We’re the ones who helped raise you, cheer you on, and (let’s be real) probably still help with the odd car repair or babysitting session. We didn’t do everything perfectly—but we did our best with what we had, and we never stopped rooting for you.

We’re not here to say Boomers are the best. But we’re not the worst, either. Every generation has its wins and its blind spots. Ours helped build the world. Yours is helping change it.

And somewhere between vinyl and virtual reality, there’s a sweet spot where we can meet.

So go ahead—call us old. But maybe also call us sometime. We’d love to hear what you’re working on.

We may not swipe as fast, but trust me—we helped wire the world.

🌍 We Raised Our Voices for Change

We protested for civil rights, women’s rights, and environmental reform. We didn’t have Instagram, but we knew how to organize and mobilize. Whether in the streets of Paris or the campuses of California, we stood up and spoke out.

The activism and values you hold dear today? We helped set that stage.

🎶 We Created the Soundtrack of Generations

We gave you Pink Floyd, Queen, Bowie, and the Stones. We watched Nouvelle Vague films and brought radical art into the mainstream. Our culture wasn’t just cool—it questioned norms, pushed boundaries, and made you feel something.

And if you’ve ever borrowed one of our old vinyls, you know it still holds up.

🧠 We Believed in Big Ideas

The Boomer generation helped expand education, modernize healthcare, and advance science—from mapping the human genome to launching Mars probes. We were the first to flood universities en masse, and we didn’t take that for granted.

We believed knowledge could change the world. Still do.

Salut les enfants (et leurs amis de 35 ans),

Oui, vous là, qui soupirez doucement quand je dis encore “Spoti-cinq” au lieu de “Spotify”. Avant de balayer d’un revers de main votre vieux Boomer de parent, laissez-moi vous raconter deux-trois choses. Pas un sermon — juste un peu de contexte, vécu de l’intérieur.

Parce qu’avant d’être vos parents, on a été des rêveurs, des contestataires, des bâtisseurs. Et moi, personnellement, j’étais dans les rues de Paris en Mai 68. Oui, vraiment.

✊ En Mai 68, j’y étais

Vous avez les réseaux sociaux. Nous, on avait des pavés.

En mai 1968, j’étais parmi les étudiants et les travailleurs qui ont dit non à un système figé, à une société qui n’évoluait pas. On a fait trembler la République, mis la France à l’arrêt, et prouvé qu’une autre vision du monde était possible.

On n’a pas tout obtenu. Mais on a ouvert des brèches — dans l’éducation, dans les droits sociaux, dans la liberté de parole. Ce n’était pas juste de la révolte, c’était une utopie en marche.

Ça vous parle, non ?

💻 On a lancé le monde numérique

Oui, je sais, on galère encore parfois avec les mots de passe. Mais n’oubliez pas : sans les Boomers, il n’y aurait pas de smartphones, d’ordinateurs portables ni d’Internet.

Steve Jobs, Bill Gates ? Boomers. Les ingénieurs qui ont construit les premiers ordinateurs, les protocoles du web ? Encore nous.

Alors d’accord, on clique parfois un peu lentement — mais on a branché les câbles du monde connecté dans lequel vous vivez.

🌍 On s’est battus pour les droits et la planète

Les droits civiques, l’égalité hommes-femmes, la protection de l’environnement : on était là dès le début. On n’avait pas de stories Instagram, mais on avait des affiches, des mégaphones, et une foi farouche dans le progrès.

Et c’est nous qui avons organisé le premier Jour de la Terre en 1970. On a créé des lois pour protéger l’air, l’eau, les espèces. Pas parfait, mais on a mis les bases.

🎶 On vous a laissé une sacrée bande-son

Pink Floyd, Gainsbourg, Bowie, les Beatles… Vous les écoutez encore, non ? Notre génération n’a pas seulement consommé la culture — elle l’a créée.

On a redéfini le cinéma, la musique, la mode, la littérature.

Si vous avez déjà piqué un vinyle dans la collection familiale, vous savez que ça tient encore sacrément la route.

🧠 On a cru au pouvoir des idées

Nous avons été les premiers à entrer massivement à l’université. On a soutenu la recherche, participé à des avancées médicales majeures, envoyé des sondes dans l’espace, cartographié le génome humain.

On pensait que la connaissance pouvait changer le monde. Et franchement, on le pense toujours.

👂 On continue d’apprendre (merci à vous)

On nous reproche parfois d’être figés, rigides. Mais beaucoup d’entre nous ont évolué, changé d’avis, remis en question leurs certitudes.

Vous nous avez appris à parler de santé mentale, à comprendre les nouvelles identités, à voir la planète autrement.

Et on vous écoute.

👪 On est toujours là, même en retrait

On ne prétend pas avoir tout réussi. Mais on a toujours été là. Pour vous élever, vous encourager, vous consoler, parfois vous embêter aussi — c’est le rôle.

Et si le pire qu’on ait fait, c’est d’envoyer un “LOL” mal placé dans un SMS… on s’en sort pas si mal, non ?

🌊 En résumé : on a cru, on s’est battus, et on continue

On a crié “Sous les pavés, la plage” parce qu’on croyait en un monde plus libre, plus juste.

Aujourd’hui, c’est vous qui vous battez pour un monde plus durable, plus inclusif, plus humain.

Et même si on n’a pas la même façon de le faire, on est souvent du même côté.

Alors la prochaine fois que vous pensez “OK Boomer”, souvenez-vous que, parfois, ce Boomer-là a dormi dans une amphi occupée, distribué des tracts, et rêvé, comme vous, de changer le monde.

Et il rêve encore.
