Short week in the Var region (draft)

The news since yesterday regarding new and violent forest fires in the Var region are devastating. What makes it worse, is that we were there last week. It is not the first fire in the region and I have witnessed the ensuing devastation many times. It is heart breaking. Fortunately nature is very strong and with time does come back, sometimes must quicker than what we think.

French firefighters use a water hose to extinguish a fire in Gonfaron, in the French department of Var, southern France, on August 17, 2021. – Thousands of people, including tourists in campsites, have been evacuated as a wildfire raged near the plush resort of Saint-Tropez in southern France, the fire service said on August 17. Around 750 firefighters and water-droppping aircraft were battling the blaze in difficult conditions, with high temperatures and strong winds. (Photo by NICOLAS TUCAT / AFP)

I intend to go back to the area next month when the tourist season is coming to a close.

Our escapade last week was fairly short but a fair amount was achieved.

Day 1 – Monday

We drove from Carcassonne to Hyeres taking the fastest route. It is only a 401 km ride along motorways through Narbonne, Montpellier, Nimes, Arles, Aix en Provence, Toulon. Basically the road follows the rim of the mediterranean with sometime spectacular views. In particular when approaching Toulon with the views of La Ciotat. In fact I would recommend not to take the motorway at this point but the secondary road. The view is even better.

Day 2 – Tuesday

Day 3 – Wednesday

Day 4- Thursday

Day 5 – Friday

More to come shortly
