As some of you might have gathered I have started collecting model cars, 1.43 scale, of French cars which have actually took part in the Le Mans 24h race over the years. There are quite a few sites on the internet of manufacturers of such models. I have been scouring some of them and started a list of possible candidates. It will take quite a while. Some of them are not that cheap.
Norway, for its part, is withdrawing from AstraZeneca. Prime Minister Erna Solberg justified these measures by the rare but serious risks that these vaccines would entail. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is now reserved for volunteers only.
It looks like the second target of 20 million first vaccinations by mid-May could be met. As of May 13th, 19 299 124 people have received their first injection and the daily average over the past 7 days is 252 000.
▫️ INCIDENCE RATE
The incidence rates are still declining in France and is now 168,52 on a national level. Locally in the Aude departement it is even better at 114,84.
▫️ TRAVEL
14/05: Vaccinated people no longer need a PCR test to enter Greece. 14/05: People who have been vaccinated or have had covid no longer need a PCR test to enter Germany. 14/05:France’s border reopening strategy has been published:
“Within the European Union, travel facilitated by the health pass To travel within the European Union, it is currently not necessary to justify the reason for travel, but prior testing obligations (-72h) are required.
The government is working with the other Member States on a “green pass” to support the resumption of tourism and facilitate border crossings through common standards.
While the test is already an element of proof used, this “green pass” will enable travellers to show that they have been fully vaccinated at border controls.
For travellers entering France from outside the European Union, tourist flows will be reopened from 9 June depending on the health situation in these countries. France will have a policy of controlling entry to its territory that is proportionate to the health situation in each third country, in accordance with a vision shared with the other Member States of the European Union.
For countries in which the virus is not actively circulating, and in which no variants of concern have been identified (“green countries”), flows may be resumed under much more flexible arrangements.
For countries where the virus is actively circulating but in controlled proportions, and without the spread of variants of concern (“orange countries”), the conditions for entry into France will be more restrictive, particularly for unvaccinated travellers.
Finally, a European emergency mechanism will aim to establish a list of “red countries” for which drastic measures will be implemented, in view of the epidemic circulation in these countries, as well as the presence of variants of concern: strict limitation of people authorised to travel, tests on boarding and arrival, strictly controlled isolation and quarantine measures.
Pending European harmonisation of the criteria for classifying “red countries”, and in order to protect the French without delay, France has already put in place these drastic measures for incoming flows from the following countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Qatar, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey, United Arab Emirates (list as of 10 May 2021).
For EU citizens wishing to travel outside the European Union, it is necessary to find out in advance about the entry restrictions and health situation in the destination country.
Travel conditions will depend on the entry restrictions applied by each country.
It is still not advisable to travel to “orange countries” and it is strongly recommended not to travel to “red countries”.
12/05: Reopening of borders: France expects reciprocity from the United States. 12/05 : The suspension of international flights to and from Nepal is extended at least until 31 May. 12/05: Self-tests are now accepted to enter the United States. However, you still need to have spent at least 14 days outside the Schengen area to enter the country. 11/05: Thailand may fully reopen its borders by 1 January 2022.
10/05: Fully vaccinated persons are now exempt from PCR testing to enter Cyprus. 10/05:Morocco has extended the state of health emergency until 10 June. 10/05: Travellers from 12 countries will be able to travel to England without quarantine from 17 May, but France is not one of them. 10/05:French Polynesia will not open to travellers from mainland France without compelling reasons until July. 10/05:Tunisia has put in place a new general lockdown from 9 to 16 May. 07/05: The quarantine requirement for entry into France has been extended to seven additional countries: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Qatar. For these countries, a PCR test of 36 hours (instead of 72 hours) or a negative PCR test of less than 72 hours accompanied by a negative antigen test of less than 24 hours is now required. 07/05:Australia‘s borders may not fully reopen until mid to late 2022.

◼︎An elephant was drinking out of a river one day, when he spotted a turtle asleep on a log. So, he ambled on over and kicked it clear across the river. “What did you do that for?” asked a passing giraffe. “Because I recognized it as the same turtle that took a nip out of my trunk 53 years ago.” “Wow, what a memory!” commented the giraffe. “Yes,” said the elephant with a wink, “turtle recall.”

◼︎ A young city boy visiting a farm wanted to be appear macho, so he went out walking with one of the hired hands. As they were walking through the barnyard, the visitor tried to begin a conversation, “Say, isn’t that fine-looking bunch of cows over there.”The hired hand replied, “Not ‘bunch,’ it’s ‘herd.'” “Heard what?” “Herd of cows.””Sure, I’ve heard of cows!” finished the city boy excitedly, “there’s a big bunch of ’em right over there.”
◼︎ “Good morning class,” A university professor greets his brand new students. “Welcome to your first official day of training. But before we begin, I’d like to ask each student to quickly introduce themselves and give a little information on what led them to be interested in this particular field of work.” The blond student in the first seat stands up. “Hello everyone!” The blond addresses, “Probably like many of you, I grew up in a small town. My dad was a farmer, of course. I remember as a little kid, I used to love helping him out with the land and the animals. I would assist him any chance I got. Even our neighbours, when they would let me! So, like many of you probably, I thought to myself why not do it for a living?” After brief silence, the professor replies “And that’s why you’ve chosen this profession? Because of your love of assisting farmers?” “That’s right!” The Blonde student replies proudly. “I want to be a pharmacist.”

And the engineer shouted, “Buy coal, Porter!”
◼︎ The doctor, who had been seeing an 80-year old woman for most of her life, finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized she has a prescription for birth control pills. “Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are BIRTH CONTROL pills?!?” “Yes, they help me sleep at night.” “Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that could possibly help you sleep!” She reached out and patted the young Doctor’s knee. “Yes, dear, I know that, but every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16 year old granddaughter drinks… And believe me, it helps me sleep at night!”
◼︎ Groan…..
At one time, there a Sea Scout camp outside of Norfolk, Virginia. It was so close to the beach that the porpoises could be seen swimming in to shore at dinnertime. The scouts would amuse themselves by throwing the scraps from their meals to the porpoises every evening. Because of this the camp’s chef would announce the meals by yelling, “It’s chow time… for all in tents and porpoises!”

◼︎ An older white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side. He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and showed it to him. The old man said, “I don’t think you understand, I want something very special.” At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over. “Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000”, the jeweller said. The young lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, “We’ll take it.” The jeweller asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by check. “I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon,” he said. Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweller phoned the old man. “There’s no money in that account.” “I know”, said the old man, “but can you imagine the weekend I had?”
We decided to go to the coast and walk up to the Plateau de Leucate for a picnic lunch overlooking the sea. A good way to exercise my brother’s 2 dogs.
After having parked the cars in the village, we stopped at this little rotisserie in the middle of town and purchased Curry Chicken with vegetables sandwiches. They turned out to be excellent.
The very pleasant and gentle walk up from the village is around 4km mainly through vines.
Then suddenly you are on top of the cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. The sun is shining, it is, as usual, a little bit windy. Time to sit down, rest and have something to it.
Time to walk down via another path which also offers some nice views. I particularly like the approach and view of Leucate Village where the cars are parked.
I decided, as I often do, to avoid the motorway on the way back home and follow “La route 20” = Wine route. It is also only a slight detour to the Chateau Ollieux Romanis which produces one of my favorite wine and funny enough I am running out. The place is being renovated and they moved the shop a couple of hundred yards away next to the pool.
I cannot think of a better place to taste and purchase a few cases.
I am back home now, sitting out with a well deserved beer. Apéritif will be in about 30 minutes. Life is hard.
The National Assembly paves the way for the “health pass following a vote on Tuesday night. It was agreed that access to certain places, establishments or events involving large gatherings of people for leisure activities or trade fairs or shows would be subject to the presentation of a negative Covid-19 screening result or proof that the individual had received a vaccine.
The European health pass “will be ready in June and operational between mid-June and the end of June. It is not a tool for restrictions, it is a tool for openness and European coordination. Those who are vaccinated will be able to travel”, said the Secretary of State for European Affairs.
On a personal touch, I am 100% behind some sort of Health Pass. I need to travel at least to Germany. I have had a vaccination certificate booklet for years. It was necessary for obtaining visas and travelling to some countries. I am still using it and in fact my anti-Covid 19 injection is officially recorded in it. I would feel much happier attending for instance a concert during the forthcoming festival if I knew that only people with health passes are also attending. In fact I think I have already decided that if helth passes are not requested I would not attend.

▫️ FOOD & BITS
Dried fruit is excellence at your fingertips
Dried fruit can be eaten without hunger. They give us a good dose of energy. So you might as well not deprive yourself. Better still, you can abuse them!
Abuse, yes, but not too much… Dried fruit is often very high in calories, even high in fat, much more so than fresh fruit. On the other hand, they are full of minerals and omega 3 and will be a precious help in the event of an energy crash… You know, during the famous 11 o’clock hunger bouts in the morning.
Dried fruits are also perfect mood enhancers, you will need them if you have to make an intense physical or intellectual effort. High school students, college students, keep a few dried fruits in your bag, you can nibble on them during your exams. There are two categories of dried fruit. Naturally dried nuts, such as pistachios or dehydrated fruit, are generally sweeter. When dried, they retain their vitamin C and are often rich in fibre. Organic dried fruit is dried more naturally and therefore retains all its nutrients. When choosing between the two categories, opt for organic dried fruit. You can eat them with your fingers but also add them to your dishes. They are delicious with cottage cheese, compote or cereals. Add them to your salads with walnuts, Comté cheese, Roquefort cheese, Fourme d’Ambert cheese… In a hot dish, dried apricots go very well with chicken, flaked almonds, candied lemon, tajine style. Dried fruits also love duck and pork, so don’t hesitate to let them cook slowly.
Prunes are rich in fibre and excellent for transit, dried apricots contain precious potassium, and almonds are a source of protein, containing as much as an egg: 25 grams for 100 g of almonds. In addition, they reduce cholesterol and have a satiating effect. Slip sultanas into your fruit salads, they strengthen the joints.
Special mention should be made of dates. This oriental delicacy is rich in carbohydrates, antioxidants… They are so nutritious that they are used a lot in cosmetics, in body oil, in shampoo for dry hair.
Make beggars with chocolate, prepare almond cakes, crumbles, candied fruits… In short, eat dried fruits, they are definitely an anti-depression food!
The director of the Regional Health Agency was able to announce on 11 May an improvement in the epidemic situation in Occitania. Thanks to a vaccination campaign that is accelerating, with a record number of injections at the beginning of the month, the rate of contamination is finally falling.
Extremely well oriented indicators” which “confirm a downward trend”. The elements delivered this Tuesday 11 May by the Director General of the ARS Occitanie were expected. Yes, the epidemic situation is finally improving in the region, as elsewhere in France. Encouraging figures, more than a year after the beginning of an epidemic that has already caused more than 4,200 deaths in Occitania.
ARS confirms “a downward trend In Occitania, the incidence rate is now established at 130 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The positivity rate is 4%.

▫️ UK DEATHS Not due to Covid but related
Alcohol deaths hit 20-year high in lockdown: UK data
Alcohol deaths in England and Wales have reached the highest levels in 20 years following a sharp rise since the start of COVID lockdown, according to government data released on Thursday.
The figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showed there had been 7,423 deaths directly caused by misuse of alcohol a 20 percent rise from 2019.
The steep rise was driven by a 17 percent increase in the second quarter of the year, after the UK began its first coronavirus lockdown in March 2020, with 22 percent and 28 percent rises in the quarters that followed.

It might be worth remembering that the sale of alcohol was banned in certain departements in France during the 1st lockdown. Brittany for example.

▫️ A CENTURY AGO (Merci Valerie pour ces images)
A brief historical reminder
The most severe pandemic in history was the Spanish Flu of 1918. It lasted 2 years, in 3 waves of infection with 500 million people infected and a total of 50 million deaths. Most deaths occurred during the 2nd wave of infection. The population was so unhappy with the quarantine and social distancing measures, that when the first deconfinement took place, the population began to rejoice in the streets, abandoning all restrictions. In the weeks that followed, the second wave of contamination arrived, with tens of millions of deaths. It is often said that history repeats itself. Let’s not let history repeat itself. Let’s be disciplined and stay on top of things.
Barcelona May 9th at the start of the latest deconfinement
I expect we shall have similar episodes on May 19th in France
The small manufacturer from Sarthe became big. With a more reliable engine and a slightly modified aerodynamic system, Jean Rondeau achieved a feat that is still unequalled today. The Manceau, exhausted at the end of the race, was taken over by Jean Pierre Jaussaud in the last two stints to stabilise the gap with the Ickx Porsche. The victory at the end of this race is a consecration for the Sarthe team.
Anyway, the postman has just been and delivered my latest acquisition
▫️ JEAN CASTEX In an exclusive interview with Le Parisien (article for subscribers) on Monday May 10th, the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, welcomed the gradual decline of the Covid-19 epidemic in France and announced the step by step planned deconfinement procedure.
🔸 May19th
For restaurants, cafés and bars. The terraces of these establishments will reopen at 50% of their capacity on 19 May, with tables seating a maximum of six people. The latter must remain seated.
For shops. All shops considered non-essential during the containment period will be able to reopen on 19 May. One customer at a time will be allowed in shops of less than 8 m2, and a minimum of 8 m2 per customer will be required for larger shops. The rule will be the same for open markets, and will be 4 m2 per person for outdoor markets.
For museums. An 8 m2 per person capacity is also planned for the reopening of museums on 19 May.
For cinemas and theatres. These cinemas will once again be open to the public on 19 May, with a maximum capacity of 35% and a ceiling of 800 spectators, according to Matignon in Le Parisien. This rule will also apply to village halls and multi-purpose rooms.
For religious ceremonies and civil weddings. These ceremonies will be able to take place with only one seat out of three occupied, and will be staggered from one row to the next.
For sports halls and swimming pools. These establishments will be able to reopen from 19 May for “priority users” such as minors, says Le Parisien. The capacity will be 35% for the public, and a ceiling of 800 spectators will be established.
🔸 June 9th
For restaurants, cafés and bars. For the second stage of these reopenings, on 9 June, the terraces will be able to reopen in their entirety, although tables for a maximum of six people will be maintained. The rooms of these establishments will also be able to reopen, with a capacity of 50% and tables of a maximum of six people.
For shops. The capacity per customer will be reduced from 8 m2 to 4 m2 on 9 June, both in shops and in indoor markets. It is lifted for outdoor markets.
For museums. As for shops, the size of the booth will be 4 m2 per person in museums from 9 June.
For cinemas and theatres. The capacity of cinemas and theatres will increase from 35% to 65% on 9 June, with a maximum capacity of 800 to 5,000 people. From 1,000 people, a health pass will be applied, says Le Parisien. These rules will also apply to village halls and multi-purpose halls.
For religious ceremonies and civil weddings. One seat out of two, as opposed to one out of three previously, may now be occupied.
For sports halls and swimming pools. Non-priority persons will have access to these establishments for “non-contact” sports, with a 50% capacity, explains Le Parisien. This will be 65% for the public, and the maximum number of spectators will rise from 800 to 5,000. A sanitary pass will be required for any reception of more than 1,000 spectators.
🔸 June 30th
For restaurants, cafés and bars. Rooms in these establishments will be allowed to open fully, while ensuring that barrier gestures and physical distancing are maintained. A health protocol will be applied according to the epidemic situation on that date.
For businesses. 30 June should mark, in principle, the end of the gauges in shops and markets, says Matignon.
For museums. Gauges will no longer be necessary in museums, but the government is calling for the maintenance of physical distancing measures and the respect of barrier gestures in these establishments.
For cinemas and theatres. These places will be able to receive the public without a gauge from 30 June, still respecting the physical distancing and barrier gestures. A health pass will continue to be applied for any event gathering more than 1,000 people.
For religious ceremonies and civil weddings. All seats will be available from 30 June.
For sports halls and swimming pools. All sports will be allowed in these facilities, and the public capacity will increase to 100% on 30 June. A health pass will still apply.
For stand-up concerts and festivals. From 30 June, standing concerts will be allowed again, with a maximum number of participants to be set by the prefect. A health pass will be required for any concert with more than 1,000 spectators. As for festivals, they will be able to resume with a capacity of 4m2 per participant, and a ceiling of festival-goers. Here too, a health pass will be required for more than 1,000 participants.

While the number of patients in critical care units has just fallen back below the 5,000 mark, Olivier Véran was satisfied on Monday that the epidemic was “continuing to decline” in France. However, the Health Minister warned that the virus “is still circulating at a high level”, hence the need for the French not to relax in applying barrier measures.
“Our strategy is first to inform the French, they have known for 15 months, on the need to be careful for themselves and for others,” he said on LCI. As such, he “calls on them, while there will be a long weekend of four days, not to hesitate to be tested in pharmacies, laboratories, via self-tests or PCR tests. “We will be deploying hundreds of thousands of tests and self-tests in the coming days for those who wish to do so,” he said.
Always conducive to family gatherings, the Ascension Bridge could be a “pivotal weekend”, according to Olivier Véran. “We want to get together, see our parents, change departments and enjoy the period,” the minister argues. “It is an important period, we are not going to compromise it by doing anything. But I am convinced that the French have the keys to reading and understanding and will be responsible,” he concluded.
For several days, the health situation in France has been improving. The number of Covid-19 patients in critical care units (intensive care units, intensive care units and continuous surveillance units) in France has fallen back below the symbolic 5000 mark (4,971). The number of deaths, the positivity rate and the incidence rate: all the other indicators have been falling recently, raising hopes that the crisis will be over by the summer. This optimism is all the more justified as the vaccination campaign continues to accelerate (17,692,900 first doses injected, 8,198,987 second doses).
Someone mentionned this bike on TV last night. I had completely forgotten I had one. In fact I cannot remember anyone else in our area / town, Paris even.
