Of flowers, châteaux and a battle of wits
(with whisky as fuel)
Exploring the Loire one glass and one proverb at a time.
Another cool and sunny day — perfect weather for exploration, or at least for pretending we’re energetic morning people. By 9 a.m., we were assembled at breakfast, maps spread, coffees consumed, and plans (mostly) agreed upon.
🌸 Chedigny – The Village That Bloomed Too Much (in the Best Way)
First stop: Chédigny, a few kilometres away — officially classified as “Village Jardin.” That title is no exaggeration. Flowers everywhere — walls, fences, windowsills, even gutters, I think. The place looks like the result of a gardening competition where everyone tied for first place.

Each plant had its own neatly printed label, which made us feel both educated and slightly judged (“Oh, you didn’t know that was a salvia guaranitica? Tsk.”).
Then we discovered “Le Jardin du Curé” — a delightful little garden behind the church, a quiet riot of colours and scents. Entry cost: 3 euros. Value: absolutely priceless.

🍽 Lunch at Le Genillé – Where Good Cheer Is on the Menu
Our next stop was Le Genillé, and specifically Le V&P, where lunch was waiting for us. Another excellent choice — delicious food, flowing wine, and a manageress so cheerful she could probably run a small country on pure optimism.
🏰 Château de Montpoupon – Hunting for Culture (Literally)
The afternoon’s cultural portion took us to the Château de Montpoupon — small but full of surprises. Its outbuildings contain entire rooms dedicated to la chasse à courre (the noble art of chasing deer while dressed like royalty). Not exactly my hobby, but fascinating to see the extent people once went to in pursuit of a fox — or perhaps an excuse for fine hats.

After absorbing our daily dose of heritage, four of us decided to head back to the gîte ahead of the rest — a tactical retreat to rest and recharge before the inevitable 6 p.m. apéritif roll call.
🍷 The Evening Ritual and the Game of Geniuses
As per tradition, new bottles of wine and whisky were opened — all in the name of cultural exchange, of course. Dinner followed, home-cooked and hearty, but the true highlight came courtesy of Christian, once again our Minister of Entertainment.
This time he presented a new challenge: a game of guessing sayings and expressions based on pictograms. Imagine a mix between Pictionary and mental gymnastics, with a dash of whisky-fuelled logic. The results were gloriously chaotic — much laughter, a few wild guesses, and the discovery that alcohol doesn’t necessarily improve one’s decoding skills.
By bedtime, spirits were high, glasses were low, and another day of our reunion drew to a cheerful close.
Moral of the Day:
Flowers lift the spirit. Castles feed the mind. Whisky fuels the genius.

England: The 51st State in Spirit
🇬🇧
There was a time when England exported culture: Shakespeare, The Beatles, Monty Python. Now? They seem to be importing everything from across the Atlantic, from pumpkin-spiced lattes to baseball caps worn backwards. England isn’t yet the 51st state, but it’s certainly applying for a green card.
Dressing Down, American Style
The stiff upper lip once came with a stiff collar and tie. Today, they’ve fully embraced the American gospel of “comfort over class.” Suits are relegated to weddings, funerals, and the occasional bank advert. Trainers, hoodies, and anything with a swoosh or a tick now pass as respectable daywear. Even the once-mighty Savile Row has to compete with sweatpants.
Fries with That?
Once upon a time, British cuisine was mocked worldwide. Now they’ve solved the problem by importing American food, which is mocked worldwide for different reasons. High streets are clogged with burger joints boasting “authentic American taste,” which usually means extra grease and double the portion. Wash it down with a bucket-sized coffee, and voilà: cultural convergence in a cardboard cup.

Customer Service with a Forced Smile
“Good morning, sir” has quietly morphed into “Hi there, how are you today?” The answer, of course, is irrelevant. The cashier doesn’t want to know about anyone’s dodgy knee or the late train. They’ve simply been trained in the fine art of fake friendliness, American-style. A nation once famed for understatement is now flirting with over-enthusiasm.
The Cult of Consumption
Remember when Black Friday was just an oddity on CNN? Now it’s a British blood sport. They’ve taken the American tradition of trampling strangers for a half-price toaster and made it their own. Add in Halloween decorations, Super Bowl parties, and pumpkin spice invading everything from muffins to toothpaste, and you start to wonder: is Thanksgiving the next import?
Lost in Translation
Even their language is under siege. Children don’t live in “flats” anymore, they live in “apartments.” It’s no longer rubbish, it’s “trash.” And when ordering in a café, the perfectly serviceable “May I have…” has been bulldozed by “Can I get…?” The invasion isn’t coming. It’s already here—smuggled in through Netflix subtitles and TikTok slang
So yes, England is still England. They still have tea, rain, and cricket. But squint a little, and you’ll see the outline of America showing through, like stars and stripes under a fading Union Jack.
God Save the King… and pass the fries.
