Irish adventures VI

DRAFT

Very good night in Cork, at last a comfy bed.

The plan today is to go in the morning to Blarney castle just outside town followed by a visit to the seaside town of Cobh and indeed it is exactly what we did. The sun was out which made it even more enjoyable.

Blarney Castle

Made it to the top

and then went for a long walk through the park and gardens

Cobh Town

Cathedral & Titanic’s last stop before the fatal crossing

By then it was lunch time which was enjoyed at the Titanic bar and restaurant located in the old ticket office and boarding area.

Afterwards, we took the Titanic experience tour

before heading back to our B&B in Cork town

Went out in the evening in search of a decent bar or pub

and found one a few hundred metres away and enjoyed a last drink for the day

Irish adventures V

DRAFT

Today we are travelling to Cork

First we have to catch the ferry to cross the river Shannon

Followed by 100km of what I would describe as country lanes. Beautiful scenery. We arrive in Cork and our Bed and Breakfast for the next couple of days around 1pm. The room and batroom are spacious and comfortable. The only possible hiccup is the parking situation.

Irish adventures IV

Quite a comfortable night but it is time to

Go for another full Irish breakfast

After which we depart on foot to meet up with a remote member of the family. We have a nice chat and exchange information on our respective kids and grandkids.

We then decide to take a short drive down the coast to Kilkee. I am keen to see the cliffs.

It is blowing a gale which add to the dramatic effects

All local restaurants are shut. I guess the season will start around Easter time ina couple of weeks. So we drive back to Kilrush and head for the Vandeleur Walled Garden.

Again it is too early in the season for flowers but the walk round the garden is pleasant enough.

and they have a Tea Room for a nice cuppa and a toastie

Back to the pub / B&B for a rest as we have already walked over 6km. We also havean appointment downstairs in the bar at 18:30 for an apéritif.

Irish adventures III

Despite an extremely comfortable bed I am awake fairly sharp. I am in no real rush this morning and the heavy rain outside does not entice me to go out immediately.

There is only one thing to do

Go for a full Irish breakfast

That should keep me going for a few hours

Despite the weather, the short drive to the west coast town of Kilrush is pleasant enough and we arrive on the dot of 12 in the pub / B&B which will be our base for the next couple of nights.

The Guinness is smooth and tasty. Both pints in fact.

Time to go for a walk in the drizzle and wind

After which a nice cup of tea and scone are more than welcome

Diner is at another pub round the corner

Irish adventures II

Awake fairly early. In my case not the best night. Always the same on the first night on a new bed. Also for some unknown reason I felt hungry which could not be the case. Inthe realised I was longing for the English breakfast I have not had in a while.

The breakfast rooms are extremely cosy and comfortable but in the end, we decided to go to the main bar / restaurant.

The plan today is to explore the town on foot this morning and pick up the hired car early afternoon for the drive to Limerick.

The general aim is the famous Guiness Storehouse.

Dublin is a collection of churches, distilleries and pubs as well as a few green parcs.

Finally we make it to Guiness

The visit is very well organised and interesting

At the top of the building, there is the so-called Gravity Bar which offers nice views of the city and is where one can enjoy free samples.

I have to admit that the pint I tasted was excellent and possibly needed

We made our way back, on foot, to the town centre and the Temple Bar area which is full of pubs

We arrived at the car hire people to pick up the reserved car by 2 pm as planned and hit the road towards Limerick for our next overnight stop.

Irish adventures

Off to Ireland for a few days for a small tour of the country. There is a direct flight from Carcassonne to Dublin with my least favorite airline Ryanair which we need to take advantage of. Car hire and all hotels are booked from Dublin to Limerick to Kilrush to Cork and back in Dublin. I also have lists of pubs and restaurants which I intend to try out en route.

Quite a pleasant flight actually. The plane was only half full so we could spread a little.

Made it to Dublin late afternoon and went straight to the pub after checking in at the hotel. The obligatory Guiness is excellent.

The place is full of life despite the not so warm weather. Pubs and restaurants everywhere. I particularly liked this one „The Hairy Lemon“

We settle for a Moroccan restaurant and are lucky to find a table available. Excellent food and good service.

Back at the hotel bar for a pleasant night cap. They have a Real Ale special offer running

Stork News

Sarralbe Webcam

The storks came back a few weeks ago and have been busy rearranging the old nest. A few days ago the first egg was laid but the female stork broke it apart on purpose a few hours later and threw the shell bits away.

Yesterday another egg was hatched

Today there is a second egg

I can guarantee it it can get addictive to watch

The planning will keep me busy.
